Special Cabinet meet to discuss quota for MBC: Chief Minister

Special Correspondent

PMK submits memorandum to Rangasamy seeking early decision on the issue As a Central directive has already authorised the Union Territory administration to take a decision on its own, there is no reason why reservation should not be introduced

PONDICHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has said that a special Cabinet meeting will be held soon under his chairmanship to discuss the plea for reservation for the Most Backward Classes (MBCs) in jobs in the Union Territory. Mr. Rangasamy announced this at a meeting the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) parliamentary party leader, M. Ramadass, had with him here on Friday.

Mr. Ramadass along with the functionaries of the State unit of the PMK had earlier taken out a rally from near Swadeshi Mills to meet the Chief Minister and present a memorandum urging immediate earmarking of quota in jobs for the MBCs here. K. Dhanraj, MP (Tindivanam constituency) and the leaders of the Pondicherry unit of the PMK were among those who participated in the rally.

Mr. Ramadass was accompanied by party functionaries N. Panneerselvam and Anandaraman.

The PMK leader made out a strong case for reservation for the MBCs in jobs.

His stand was that the administration should have announced the quota while earmarking reservation for the MBCs in educational institutions and also in extending the benefits of the various welfare schemes on the basis of a missive from the Centre.

Mr. Ramadass said that the Pondicherry Administration need not contact or seek clearance of the Central Government any longer for job reservation for MBCs. As a Central directive had already authorised it to take a decision on its own, there was no reason why the reservation should not be introduced. The Chief Minister repeatedly told Mr. Ramadass that he was equally interested in ensuring job reservation for the MBCs. He said he would call for the files and have a discussion with the Chief Secretary soon. A special cabinet meeting would also be held soon to discuss the issue.
