Vani Doraisamy
CHENNAI:
With six more States getting ready to constitute their own State Biodiversity Boards, the National Biodiversity Authority is all set to broadbase its activities across the country.
The six States that have submitted proposals to the NBA are Rajasthan, Pondicherry, Andaman and Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Chhattisgarh, NBA chairman Dr. S. Kannaiyan told The Hindu at the end of a review meeting of existing State Biodiversity Boards here on Friday.
Officials from Karnataka, Goa, Punjab, West Bengal, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland participated in the meet.
The review meeting recommended that issue and need-based financial support be extended to the State boards. Several biodiversity-rich heritage sites are to be notified soon in various States.
The meeting recommended that lawyers, magistrates and Customs officials be included in the move to spread environmental awareness. NGOs and rural communities must also be involved.
