BHOPAL: Normal life and movement of vehicles continued to remain affected on many highways in southern Madhya Pradesh on Friday due to heavy rain this week. The district authorities were engaged in rescue and relief operations on a war footing in Balaghat and Seoni districts on Friday. The Lanji and Kirnapur tahsils in Balaghat district are the worst affected. Despite some improvement in the weather since Thursday night, the rivers and rivulets were still over-flowing in many parts of southern Madhya Pradesh on Friday evening. According to information received here, vehicles were not plying on the Balaghat-Rajegaon, Rajegaon-Kirnapur and Rajegaon-Gondia sections as three rivers -- Deo, Ghisarri and Bagh -- were in spate. The Bagh river was flowing over the bridge on the Balaghat-Rajegaon road on Friday evening. Similarly the flooding of Son River had also affected traffic on the Kirnapur-Lanji road in Balaghat and some villages had been marooned or flooded by the waters of Bagh and Son on the Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra border. Meanwhile, there was much confusion caused by a report published in an evening newspaper on Thursday that heavy rain had caused a crack in the world famous Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi near the State capital. Apparently the report was picked up by a TV channel. When contacted, the Superintending Archaeologist of the Archaeological Survey of India, K.K. Mohammad, told The Hindu that the World Heritage site and the Buddhist monuments are well protected and preserved.
