Lakhs expected for Polamamba festival

VISAKHAPATNAM: Sri Polamamba festival organised by Diguvarelliveedhi Panchayati Rellikula Samkshema Sangham will begin at Diguvarelliveedhi on Monday morning.

Lakhs of people not only from the city but also from the neighbouring Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and Orissa are expected to participate in the 70-day festival celebrated once in three years, according to sangham's in-charge president Inti Yellarao. Cultural programmes would be organised during the festival, he added. According to legend, the idol of Sri Polamamba was brought in a boat from Orissa region about 150 years ago, which is why the deity is also referred to as Oddipolamamba.
