Dharam Singh flayed for not attending fete

Special Correspondent

`Chief Minister's action is an affront to freedom fighters'

GULBARGA: Leaders of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Vimochana Dinacharana Mathu Abviruddi Samiti on Saturday criticised Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh for not attending the Liberation Day celebrations here.

The leaders, however, spared Water Resources Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also the district in-charge Minister, for not attending the celebrations.

Speaking at a function organised by the samiti at Vallabhai Patel Chowk, Secretary of the samiti Laxmanrao Dasti took exception to the absence of Mr. Dharam Singh and accused him of deliberately avoiding the function.

Mr. Dasti said the Chief Minister's action of not attending the celebrations after accepting the invitation extended by the samiti is an affront to freedom fighters who had sacrificed their life for the liberation of the Princely State of Hyderabad.

The samiti leaders claimed that the Chief Minister had agreed to hoist the tricolour on Saturday at the official function.

Mr. Dasti said the elected representatives, who did not attend the celebrations, should know that they are enjoying political powers because of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.

President of the samiti Shashil G. Namoshi criticised Mr. Dharam Singh for not participating in the celebrations and said he (Chief Minister) lost an opportunity to hoist the tricolour to mark the occasion here.

He said Mr. Dharam Singh, who will visit Gulbarga on Sunday to participate in the function to lay the foundation stone of a building for the circuit Bench of the High Court of Karnataka, could have advanced his visit by a day and shared the happiness of the people of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

Congress leaders, who attended the functions organised by the samiti and the district administration, made no attempt to defend the Chief Minister. Only Marutirao D. Malay, Congress MLC, made a feeble attempt to defend the Chief Minister stating that Mr. Dharam Singh was in New Delhi.
