Dowry case

ERODE : The Erode All Women Police registered a dowry harassment case against six persons today. Police said that four years back Vajravel married Kamala when 40 sovereigns of gold jewels and cash of Rs 50,000 was given.

On Friday Kamala came to the All Women police, made a complaint against Vajravel, mother-in-law Ruckmani and four other family members Sakthivel, his wife Bhuvaneswari, Mallika and her husband, that she was being harassed with more demands of dowry.

Suspended

Salem: Six salesmen of fair price shops in the district were placed under suspension pending enquiry for their alleged involvement in malpractices while distributing essential commodities to the cardholders.

A flying squad from the Department of Co-operative Societies conducted surprise raids at 55 fair price shops in Salem urban, Magudanchavadi, Kadayampatti, Mecheri and Gengavalli and found out short supply, bogus billing etc. A fine of Rs. 16,601 also had been collected from the erring employees.

According to a senior co-operative official, the Department had also placed six salesmen belonging to shops at Gundukkal, Thittacheri, Kavarpanai, Veeraganur, Thiruvalipatti and Edankanasalai under suspension for their reported involvement in various malpractices. - Special Correspondent

Special awards for drivers

SALEM: Special Commissioner and Secretary of Transport R. Karpurasundarapandiyan distributed the bus passes and other benefits that were realised after the recent wage revision to the employees of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Salem Division, at a function here on Friday evening.

He also presented special awards to drivers with impeccable performance of no-accident.

Human chain

PUDUKOTTAI: A human chain to create awareness of prevention of addiction to alcohol and tobacco was formed in front of the bus stand here recently under the auspices of the Pudukottai Central Jaycees.

The Additional Superintendent of Police, E. Bharathidasan, said the police had registered a good number of cases on charges of drunken driving. Awareness campaign would help bring down the rate of such incidence, he added.

The president of the Jaycees, K. S. K. Arumugam, said the human chain formed part of the Jaycee fortnight celebrations. The correspondent of the Oxford Catering College, A. Suresh, spoke.

Silent procession

ARIYALUR: Cadres of the Paatali Makkal Katchi took out a silent procession from the party office to the Anna statue here on Saturday as a mark of respect to the Vanniyar Sangam volunteers, who were killed in police firing in Villupuram district during the `road roko' agitation organised in support of its demand for reservation in 1987.

Led by the party's district secretary (west), Balu, they lit candles and observed a minute's silence.

A similar procession was taken out at Jayakondam. The State deputy general secretary, T. Tirumavalavan, led the procession.

Three arrested

PERAMBALUR: The police on Saturday arrested S. Periyasamy (38), R. Thambidurai (42) and G. Nambiar (37) on the charge of abusing a person belonging to Scheduled Caste at Varagupadi near Maruvathur on Thursday.

The trio allegedly abused Thangaraj, husband of the local village panchayat president, following a duel over implementation of a rural work.

Two held for bid to break idols

TIRUCHI : Two members of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam including its district president S.T. Rajendran were arrested here on Saturday when they attempted to break idols of Vinayaka. However, they were released in the evening.

Police sources here said the Kazhagam members were taken into custody near the Periyar statue at Central bus stand here. Earlier, they garlanded the statue of Periyar on his birth anniversary.

University convocation

TIRUCHI: The 22nd annual convocation of Bharathidasan University will be held at the university campus on October 20.

Graduates and post-graduates who had passed their final examinations in November 2004 and April 2005 should submit application forms to receive their degrees on or before October 2, says a press release.

The application forms would be available at all affiliate colleges of the university. Candidates, who had passed through the Centre for Distance Education, could obtain application forms from the distance education centres. — Special Correspondent

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 120.62 feet today. The inflow was 32,507 cusecs and the discharge 18000 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

63 women protestors held

TIRUNELVELI : The Pazhavoor police arrested 63 women of Chidambarapuram for detaining a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus.

The police said the protestors, mostly members of self-help groups, staged a road roko at Chidambarapuram bus stop on Saturday morning against the official decision to ply the Nagercoil - Chidambarapuram bus through some more villages, which consumed more time to reach Chidambarapuram.

As the talks held by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Singaravelu, failed, the Revenue Divisional Officer, Cheranmahadevi, Anbazhagan, tried to pacify the protestors. He suggested that the bus, which was operated between Nagercoil and Chidambarapuram six times a day, would traverse through these additional villages three trips a day and take the direct route on the remaining three trips.

When the protesting women were in no mood to accept this proposal, the police had no other way but to arrest the protestors. However, they were released in the evening. — Staff Reporter.

Youth nabbed for teasing student

Tuticorin : Jeyamurugan (32) was arrested on Saturday for allegedly teasing a college student at Melashanmugapuram near here on September 14.

Police said the arrest was made on the basis of a complaint filed by Rajeswari (18), a sophomore at St. Mary's College, that the accused had teased and subsequently threatened her while she was standing in front of her house. — Staff Reporter

Held for theft

Tuticorin : The police on Saturday arrested Solomonraj (37) in connection with a theft case.

They said that the accused had stolen a motorcycle belonging to Sakthivel (30) when it was parked in front of Gandhiraj Hospital at Kovilpatti on June 20. The stolen vehicle was recovered and the accused was remanded to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter.

LPG cylinders in short supply

Nagercoil : Owing to the shortage of LPG cylinders at various gas agencies, an undue delay in supply of cylinders has been reported from various parts of Kanyakumari district.

The customers are often being made to wait for at least 10 or 20 days even after the registration.

The customers said that the present shortage was triggered by heavy supply for Onam celebrated by a good number of Keralities living in different parts of the district. — Staff Reporter.

Medical treatment to fishermen

Nagercoil : Collector Sunil Paliwal arranged for providing medical treatment to seven Thoothur fishermen, who returned after languishing in Pakistan prisons for more than eight months.

The Collector, who visited Thoothur, heard their tales of woes. One of the fishermen told the Collector that he sustained grievous injury when jail sentries hit him with the butt of a rifle on his shoulders. — Staff Reporter.

Clean-up Day

Tuticorin : The Indian Coast Guards and National Cadet Corps (naval wing) celebrated International Coastal Clean-up Day, which falls on September 17 here on Saturday.

Official sources said 100 Coast Guard men and 150 NCC personnel cleaned the five km-long beach stretch between port trust administrative building and port trust guesthouse.

Commandant of Coast Guard, S. D. Sonak, and senior officials of Coast Guard and NCC were present. — Staff Reporter.

Vasan call to Party workers

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president G.K.Vasan on Sunday alleged that the AIADMK was trying to "misuse self help groups for political gains," and urged Congress workers to maintain vigil.

In a statement here, Mr. Vasan said the Centre had formed the SHGs to improve the living conditions of poor women in rural areas. Though the Centre had sanctioned Rs 1700 crore as loan for these groups, the State Government concealed the fact and was giving an impression that the loan was sanctioned by it.

The constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance had a duty to prevent the misuse of the groups by the ruling party, he added. — Special Correspondent

Beach cleaned up

CHENNAI : The Coast Guard on Saturday organised an international coastal cleanup on the beach near the Cooum.

Inaugurating the programme, Commander, Coast Guard region (East), Comm. U.N.Chitnavis, stressed the importance of creating awareness and maintaining a healthy environment.

People should live in harmony with nature.

Several defence and civil dignitaries participated along with nearly 400 persons who provided support for the campaign, according to a defence press release.— Special Correspondent

Dispute resolved

PALANI: Tension gripped Balasmudram village following a dispute between two communities over a funeral procession. Heavy police force was deployed to bring the situation under control.

Abdul Rahman (54) died at his residence on Pallivasal Street and his relatives wanted to take out the funeral procession through Sri Kottai Kaliamman Temple Road. But the residents there protested saying they would be celebrating the temple festival. They advised Rahman's relatives to take out the procession through Mandukkal Road, behind the temple.

Superintendent of Police M. Kandasamy, along with revenue officials, convened a peace meeting.

After hectic parleys, he too suggested the alternative route.

He announced that another peace meeting would be held on September 22 to find a permanent solution. — Staff Reporter

8 child labourers rescued SALEM: Eight child labourers were rescued from silver anklet units here on Friday following

simultaneous raids on 50 units in the Sevvapet area since Thursday.

The teams led by Inspector of Labour G. Mahalingam, Smile Project Director P. V. Viswanathan and Inspector of Factories Dinakaran screened nearly 100 boys and girls. Action has been initiated action against five silver anklet units.

The rescued children were admitted to Smile schools.

Mr. Mahalingam urged the public to co-operate with the administration in eradicating child labour.

Air Deccan additional services

Coimbatore: Air Deccan has announced an additional evening service on the Coimbatore-Chennai-Coimbatore and Bangalore-Coimbatore-Bangalore sectors from September 26.

Presently, Air Deccan flight DN 125 leaves Chennai at 5.45 a.m. to arrive in Coimbatore at 7 a.m.

In the return direction it used to leave Coimbatore as DN 126 at 7.20 to reach Chennai at 8.35 a.m. — Staff Reporter
