Boat race to protect a lake

Nature lovers have been on a campaign to save the water body

KOLLAM: The Vattakayal is a freshwater lake at Maruthadi in Kollam city facing environmental degradation. Nature lovers of the area have been campaigning for long to save the lake. To pep up their campaign, they have now organised a boat race on the lake.

At a press conference here on Saturday, the organisers said the boat race will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The programme will begin with a water carnival to be inaugurated by Kollam Mayor Sabida Beegum at 2 p.m.

A cultural sail past will be flagged off by INTUC State president K. Suresh Babu.

Minister for Tourism K.C. Venugopal will flag off the boat race at a public meeting that will be inaugurated by Labour Minister Babu Divakaran.

Chavara MLA Shibu Baby John will preside over the function. A fireworks display over the lake, Kayalpooram, will be held at 7 p.m.
