Two held for duping banks

Staff Reporter

They used to take loans on the basis of forged documents

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the South-West Delhi police for allegedly cheating banks by taking loans to buy cars on the basis of forged documents and then disposing them of.

According to the police, one of the accused, Amit Bhardwaj, a resident of Haryana, was arrested at his hideout in South-West Delhi a couple of days ago. At his instance, the gang leader, Shakir, was arrested at Khureji. The police have recovered a Toyota Qualis, one Ford Ikon, a Maruti Zen and two motorcycles at their instance.

During interrogation, Shakir allegedly told the police that he would approach private multi-national banks to get cars financed through them on the basis of forged papers. After getting the delivery of the cars, he would dispose them of to his contacts in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Haryana. The police said the cars were usually bought in Amit's name. Amit allegedly confessed to having delivered about a dozen cars to Shakir. These included high-end cars like Ford Ikon and Scorpio.

The police said Shakir had earlier been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police and the New Delhi police on similar charges and also for vehicle theft. However, after he was released from jail 10 months ago, he resumed his operations along with Amit, a new entrant to Shakir's gang. Shakir, the police said, always used to change his partners after being arrested.
