THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kathakali singer Venmani Haridas died at a private hospital in the city on Saturday afternoon. He was 59 and is survived by his wife and two sons. Haridas was admitted to hospital on September 6 following liver problems. Born at Venmani Mana, near Aluva, Haridas was a product of Kerala Kalamandalam, a leading Kathakali school in the State. He was associated with Ahmedabad-based Darpana, run by danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai, before becoming associated with Margi, a Kathakali school in the city. He had given a number of performances with leading Kathakali artistes in various parts of the State and abroad. Haridas also played a significant role in popularising Kathakali music by conducting concerts. He had acted in a few films, including `Swaham' and `Vanaprastham.' Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Minister for Culture A.P. Anil Kumar are among those who have mourned Haridas.
