Ration rice seized

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Civil Supplies CID police seized 220 gunny bags of ration rice from a Karnataka-registered lorry on the GST Road on Friday.

According to a press release while conducting a vehicle check near Perungalathur early on Friday, the police stopped a lorry. On seeing the police, the driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

A check of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of the ration rice. Each gunny bag was packed with 50 kg of rice, which was transported without any record or proper documents.

Police arrested M. Ponnusamy (25), who was in the lorry, told the police that his employer, Narayananan of Washermanpet, asked him to transport the rice bags to Karnataka. The rice was handed over to the authorities of the Civil Supplies Corporation godown at Anna Nagar. A special party was formed to trace the absconding driver, the release added.
