Kuriantharan wins Chambakkara race

KOCHI: The Chambakkara fish market, usually crowded with traders, had a different crowd on Saturday, the fourth day of Onam.

The boat race organised by the Eroor Pereekkad Boat Club at the Chambakkara backwaters had all the locals gathering at the finishing point to applaud the winners.

The cheering squads gathered around the finishing point at Chambakkara were in full gusto for their favourites. The winners were ecstatic.

It was yet another year for the Eroor-Chambakkara boat race and the banks of the backwaters was crowded with the locals. The race ended with a promise of another such event next year with more participants.

There were 11 participants in the boat race and the event was held in two sections of Grade A and B. While there were four participants in Grade A, there were seven in Grade B.

In Grade A, the St. Sebastian boat from the Kuriantharan Boat Club won the race with K.C. Antony leading the team. Saravanan from Kunnara led by K.K. Ayyappan, came in second. In Grade B the winning boat was Gibi Thattakan from Thykoodam Boat Club. Siby Thykoodam led the team. Hanuman No.2 from YMBC, Thathonithuruth, led by K.P. Pushkaran was second in this section.

The 900 m race, starting from Kunnara in Eroor to Chambakkara was conducted in three tracks. A number of floats depicting the cultural mix of the State were also part of the Jalolsavam 2005.

Dominic Presentation, Minister for Fisheries and Sports, inaugurated the event. K.Babu, MLA, presided. Badminton players and Arjuna award winner George Thomas presented the awards to the winners at the closing ceremony of the event. The winners were presented the Pandit K.P. Karuppan Memorial Award and the K.B. Rajesh Memorial Award.
