Power shutdown

BESCOM has informed that there will be no power supply on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in some areas of the city. Areas that will be affected are Geethanjali Layout, NEML, Airport Road, Indiranagar, Texas Instruments, Jeevanbima Nagar, ADA, G.M. Palya and surrounding areas.

Award for BEL

Bharat Electronics Ltd. has won the Indira Gandhi Raj Bhasha Award for 2003-04. BEL Chairman and Managing Director Y. Gopal Rao received the award from Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi recently. BEL was judged the best among Union Government establishments in this region in implementing the official language.

Fellowship for surgeon

The Indian Orthopaedic Association has conferred its fellowship on John Ebenezer, consulting orthopaedic and spine surgeon of Bangalore. He will be attending the British Orthopaedic Association's international conference to be held next week in Birmingham.

Training

Canara Bank through its Centre for Entrepreneurship Development for Women, Bangalore, will conduct a free training programme on "bhel and chaats" for women from low income groups.

This will be held on September 26 and 27 and is open to women aged from 18 to 40. For registering, contact the bank's head office on 22238767 or 22221581 (extn. 242).

`Transport adalat'

A `transport adalat' has been arranged at the Regional Transport Office, Yeshwantpur (Bangalore North), on September 26 at 3 p.m. to hear grievances of the public. Senior officers of the department will be present.

Essay contest

Royal Society of Chemistry, Deccan Section, at the Indian Institute of Science has invited essays from students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. on `Role of fossil fuel in human activity and industrialisation and alternative fuels and economics.' Essays should be within 2,000 words and should be submitted to Narain Mahishi at the IISc. campus before November 1. For details, call 23600180/22932597

Suspended

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East) M. Abdullah Saleem on Saturday placed under suspension a sub-inspector attached to the Ashoknagar traffic police station on charges of negligence and dereliction of duty.

According to an official release, sub-inspector Somashekar, who was on duty at Opera junction, off Brigade Road, around 10.30 p.m. on Friday, had not taken any action against those who had parked their vehicles in a no-parking area near the junction. Public and autorickshaw drivers had parked their vehicles in the no-parking area, hindering the traffic flow.
