Fined for ticketless travel

As many as 339 persons, including 280 unauthorised hawkers, were apprehended during magisterial checks on ticketless travel in the first five months of the current fiscal and prosecuted by the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway in April-August.

A total fine of Rs. 2,03,694 was realised from them. In addition, 52 of them were sentenced to one-month imprisonment, according to a communication from the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager.

Free medical camp

The Walkers Club, in association with Union Bank of India, is organising a free medical camp for the poor on Sunday at Free Masons Hall on Beach Road.

Ozone Day

The need to protect earth's ozone layer by all countries was emphasised by Joint Chief Environmental Engineer of Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board Surendra Raju at the Ozone Day function organised by Divis Laboratories at Chippada on Friday. Its director (projects) Rao Divi, who presided, said that by the year 2100, earth's temperature would shoot up by 5.8 degree Celsius, if the ozone layer were not protected. APPCB environmental engineers Sri Rama Murthy and Ch. Raja Sekhar spoke.

Viswakarma puja

Bhavaan Viswakarma puja was performed at the Jindal Stainless Steel Limited's factory in Kottavalasa on Saturday by its senior vice-president Sitaram Agarwal. He later hosted a reception to invitees.

Villagers from nearby rural areas were allowed to visit the factory.
