Fatwa against Sania condemned

CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday condemned the fatwa issued by some Muslim clerics against Sania Mirza's tennis attire.

"It is the aim of these self-appointed guardians of Islam to keep Muslim women in a state of permanent subordination," the party said in its political resolution on the second day of its national executive meeting here.

It was critical of the fatwa issued in the Imrana case and the one barring Muslim women from contesting elections if they were not under the veil.

"The tennis star Sania Mirza, who has brought glory, was instructed by a fatwa to dress according to Islamic norms," the party said. — PTI
