Onam celebrated at Central Prison

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Onam was celebrated at the Central Prison here in all its traditional gaiety. The grand finale of the celebrations was on Thiruvonam day, when an `athappoo' contest was organised.
All prison inmates took part in the celebrations with enthusiasm and prepared 15 `athappookkalams.' Tele serial artistes Sajitha Beti, Kochupreman and Laila were the chief guests on the occasion. Prisoners dressed as Mahabali and Vamanan welcomed the guests.
They also performed several folk arts such as `Pulikkali' and `Kaduva kali.' Prizes for the best `athappookkalams' were given away by the chief guests.
Onam celebrations were organised by the prison authorities and SOMA, an NGO working on a Promotion of Sexual Health project in the prison.
