Woman to chair Kalpetta municipality

Special Correspondent

Seven probables for the top post

KALPETTA: That a woman is going to be the chief of the Kalpetta municipal council for the first time in its history has enhanced political interest in the elections on September 26 to Wayanad district's lone municipality.

As in the Wayanad district panchayat, in the Kalpetta municipal council too, the top post has been reserved for a woman. The choice of chairperson will, of course, be made only after the results are announced.

If the United Democratic Front (UDF) wins, the chairperson is expected to be a nominee of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Three of the candidates fielded by the IUML are women. The CPI(M) has fielded four women, one whom will become the chairperson if the LDF returns to power.

Another striking feature of the Kalpetta municipal election scene is the absence of candidates contesting under the BJP election symbol. The LDF campaign managers allege an independent, who has the support of the UDF in division 18, is in fact a BJP candidate.

The election is expected to be a close contest since the UDF is expected to make an all-out attempt to post its maiden win.
