BELGAUM: The Government has released another Rs. 5 crores towards creation of infrastructure for the new Government medical college coming up on the District Government Hospital premises here. Disclosing this here on Sunday, Minister for Agriculture Marketing and district in-charge Prakash B. Hukkeri said the Land Army, which has taken up construction, will complete work on the ground and first floors of the college building by the end of January next, when the

official team of Medical Council of India is scheduled to visit here to assess the infrastructure created for the medical college as the Government wants to start the admission process from the academic year 2006-07.

Inquiry

The Minister said an inquiry would be ordered into the deaths caused by gastroenteritis in Hukkeri, his home taluk.

He said the Government has taken serious note of the 13 deaths and the outbreak of the epidemic in 23 villages in the taluk.

He said he had studied the problems including repair and cleaning works of the filter unit at Hidkal Dam from where the 22 affected villages were getting drinking water about five months ago. But there was no follow-up. However, the district administration is yet to ascertain the exact reasons for the outbreak of the epidemic. He said he was not sure whether it was because of supply of raw water to these villages. The inquiry would reveal the fact soon.

Road repair

The Minister said the Government has provided Rs. 3 crores from the Calamity Relief Fund to road repair in the city. The work would be taken up on priority and the contractors would be asked to ensure maintenance of the roads for at least three years from the date of completion.

The major roads to be taken up for repair and asphalting include Old Pune-Bangalore Road, KLE Hospital Road and College/Congress Road.

Ramesh L. Kudachi, MLA, and Deputy Commissioner, Shalini Rajneesh, were present.
