Chandrashekhara Patil
BANGALORE: The Kannada Sahitya Parishat's advisory and executive committee's recommendations on amending bylaws pertaining to elections to the parishat will be discussed at an extraordinary general body meeting on September 25. Parishat President Chandrashekhara Patil told presspersons here on Sunday that the advisory committee met on May 30 this year and the amendments relate to increasing the term of the president from three years to five years, and to facilitate the incumbent to contest again. The September 25 meeting is expected to ratify these amendments, though it will come into effect only after the present committee of office-bearers completes its term. It could not be implemented with retrospective effect.
Sahitya Sammelana
Preparations for the 72nd Sahitya Sammelana scheduled to be held in Bidar from November 18 to 20 are going on apace, Mr. Patil said.
Mr. Patil said the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) had set up a permanent fund of Rs. 30 lakhs for the annual Nrupatunga Sahitya Prashasti.
The award would be given to an eminent litterateur, and it would include a purse of Rs. 1.11 lakhs.
The award money was the highest, and would be given to anyone who had not already been honoured with prestigious awards like Pampa Prashasti and other literary awards.
The parishat's diploma courses in deciphering inscriptions and folklore studies were now recognised by the Kannada University in Hampi, Mr. Patil said.
Mr. Patil said he would ask Law Minister H.K. Patil to seek the vacation of the High Court stay on the case relating to implementation of mother tongue as the medium of instruction at the primary school level.
After getting an update on the legal status on the issue of teaching English from first standard, he would seek the setting up an expert committee to decide on the issue of whether English should be taught from first standard, Mr. Patil said.
Opposition
Meanwhile the Kannada Sangharsha Samithi has come out in opposition to the proposed changes in the parishat's bylaws.
It has convened a meeting here on the evening of September 20 to discuss the issue. Freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy will preside over the meeting to be held at the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists' premises on the District Office Road, according to Ramanna Kodihosahalli of the samithi.
