TIRUCHI: The police on Sunday nabbed beggars who were found loitering at various places in the city causing inconvenience to the public. A team of policemen rounded up beggars from busy places like Central bus Stand, junction, Othakadai and TVS Toll Gate. Within a few hours, they apprehended 20 beggars including three women and brought them to the Cantonment Police station here. A list of their names and addresses, if any, was prepared. Fresh clothes were provided to them with the assistance of a non-government organisation. It was ascertained how many of them were mentally ill, how many had their kith and kin residing in the city or elsewhere and how many had none to support them. Out of the 20, three were found to be mentally ill including a woman, who were sent to an asylum here, while eight were sent to a Home at Karumandapam. The others were dropped at their respective residences with a police officer accompanying each one of them after being advised and counselled, a senior police official said. The operation was carried out following instruction from the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, N. Tamilselvan.
