COIMBATORE: : Beginners as well as leading artistes will perform classical dances at the Natyanjali Dance Festival to be organised at the Perur Temple by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis, from September 23 to 25. The president, V. Rajkumar, said that the annual dance festival aimed at keeping alive the rich heritage of performing arts in India. Such performances were patronised in ancient times as a form of education, development and character building. Entry is free. He said that among those who had performed in earlier years were Padma Subramaniyam, Sudha Rani Raghupathy, Alarmel Valli, Vempatti and Sonal Mansingh. "Natyanjali as an event is steeped in devotion, divinity, purity of art and beauty. Above all, it is an elevating experience for all those who witnesses the event and remain enchanted." Following is the schedule for the three-day event: September 23: Inauguration (6 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.); Bharathanatyam by Shylaja and group, Chennai (6.45 p.m. to 7.50 p.m.); Bharathanatyam group dance by C. V. Chandrasekar and troupe (8 p.m. to 9.15 p.m.). September 24: Performance by local dance school (6 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.); `Shanmatham', a thematic group presentation by Lakshmanan, Chennai (6.45 p.m. to 7.50 p.m.); Kuchipudi group dance by Uma Muralikrisha, Chennai (8 p.m. to 9.15 p.m.). September 25: Performance by local dance school (6 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.); Odissi by Pushpitha Misra and group, Bhuvaneswar (6.45 p.m. to 7.50 p.m.); Dance drama by Gayathri Balagurunathan and group, Chennai (8 p.m. to 9.15 p.m.). "The unique feature is that the programmes will be conducted inside the temple, amidst the lofty gopurams and sacred corridors of the ancient and majestic Perur Temple, well-known for its artistic and sculptural beauty. Above all this, the temple is the holy abode of Lord Nataraja, the Lord of Eternal Cosmic Dance. Perur, known as Melai Chidambaram, is the most fitting place for this event," he said.
