Help is on the way from Japan for some bright children from needy families in the State that have lost their breadwinners to cancer. The leader and members of a student team from Japan, who are currently in the State capital, have decided to donate a sum of money for providing education to these children. The team leader, Shimaoka Koichi, professor at the University of Saitama, Japan, will hand over the money to Care Plus, the home care division of the Pain and Palliative Clinic at the Regional Cancer Centre at a function here on Wednesday. The city-based Japan Cultural and Information Centre, the Kerala Japan Friendship Society based in Japan, and the Thiruvananthapuram sub-centre of the Association of Overseas Technical Scholarship, are behind the initiative. Prof. Koichi will hand over the money to George Varughese, president of Care Plus at the function, which will be chaired by RCC founder-director and Care Plus patron M. Krishnan Nair. Care Plus, using funds from donors, sponsor the education of over 50 children from cancer-afflicted families at present. Recognising the financial and emotional burden that cancer imposes upon families, the group has been trying to extend financial support to children from these families to continue their studies and in helping the families to set up some small revenue-generating enterprises.
