Karanth award for Veerappa Moily

Staff Correspondent

KOTATHATTU (UDUPI DISTRICT): The first Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth Hutturu Prashasti (Kota Shivaram Karanth birthplace award) will be given to the former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, on October 10, the birth anniversary of Shivaram Karanth.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, the President of Kotathattu Gram Panchayat, Prabhakar Kanchan, said the award would be given at Kota, the birthplace of Shivaram Karanth. A selection committee chose the name of Mr. Moily for the award. The gram panchayat felt that as Shivaram Karanath was born at Kota, an award bearing his name should be given.

Mr. Moily was chosen for the award because he (Mr. Moily) had deep knowledge of Shivaram Karanth's works and had tried to implement some of Shivaram Karanth's thoughts. Besides, Mr. Moily was a poet and novelist in his own right.

Author Jayant Kaikini will present the award to Mr. Moily. The award consists of a silver plaque embossed with the picture of Shivaram Karanth drawn by K.K. Hebbar. The Principal Secretary, Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, V.P. Baligar, will unveil a portrait of Shivaram Karanth at the Shambhavi Vidyadayini Giliyaru School in Kota, to which Shivaram Karanth was attached.

The award presentation ceremony will also be held in the same school. An exhibition of books will be held on October 9 on the school premises. This was the first time that a gram panchayat had ventured to institute an award in Udupi district, Mr. Kanchan said.

The president of the selection committee, Vittal G., Nagaratna, the vice-president of Kotathattu Gram Panchayat, and the General Secretary of the district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, Kota Srinivas Poojary, were present.
