PONDICHERRY: Did you know that college students are good rocket engineers? The only problem with the statement is that they aren't qualified to launch rockets of the Sriharikota kind but those made of paper. And at the fashion show organised recently as part of Pecofes 05, the three-day cultural celebrations of the Pondicherry Engineering College, rockets flew from one side to another.

The students walked the ramp despite the sharp intermittent showers. It looked as if the Rain God too wanted to participate.

Rajiv Gandhi Engineering College's presentation with fashionable tops — shirts with CDs, shirts made of tape, shirts with cigarette covers, tattooed bodies — was the top of the chart. The team, which won the first place, Bharathiar Palkalai Koodam, started with leather garments, which had stoneage wear fashioned after the Flintstones. Then they also had something with satin clothes.

The Manakula Vinayakar College team had something to wear for every time of the day. They began their day dressed in sports wear. Then the formal wear took the stage.

Students of SASTRA Deemed University from Thanjavur were the overall champions and took the shield beating 15 other colleges. It was the same case last year too. "They seem to be good at everything that they do. Every student, even class toppers, gets a chance to excel at his or her event," said Rahul R, who headed the reception committee.

JIPMER came in first in the light music event, while SASTRA came first in choreography. A total of 320 students from 16 colleges in Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu including Thyagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, and Sairam College of Engineering, Chennai, participated. Gopinath, a PEC student, said "this time we had most of the events taking place at the auditorium instead of at several locations as in the past year. So organising the event was easier. We have to thank the college authorities for this," he added.
