Verdict reserved in murder case

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday reserved its verdict on a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking cancellation of bail granted to the former Uttar Pradesh Minister, Amarmani Tripathi, and his wife Madhumani, accused in the poetess Madhumita murder case.

A Bench of Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice R.V. Raveendran reserved orders on conclusion of arguments by Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam for the CBI, senior counsel Rakesh Diwedi and K.T.S. Tulsi for the accused. The ASG contended that the bail granted by the Allahabad High Court to Mr. Tripathi and his wife should be cancelled as being influential persons they could tamper with witnesses. He said the accused had attempted to interfere with the investigation of the case from the day the poetess was murdered at her Lucknow residence.

Counsel for the accused opposed the CBI plea stating that the accused had cooperated with the CBI in the investigation of the case and the court should always be careful while dealing with the liberty of persons.
