Safdarjung case handed over to Crime Branch

Staff Reporter

Controversy over identity of the suspect

NEW DELHI: In the wake of the charge by the 30-year-old woman who was allegedly criminally assaulted and robbed of her jewellery in a toilet on the fifth floor of Safdarjung Hospital here on September 14 that the police had arrested the wrong man, investigations in the case have been handed over to the Crime Branch.

The victim, who is a resident of Mehrauli in South Delhi, had told a television news channel on Sunday that the police had arrested the wrong person and it was under pressure that she identified him as the one who had assaulted her and robbed her of her jewellery.

For their part, the South-West Delhi police claimed to have recovered the victim's ornaments from a jeweller, who was arrested for having received stolen property. Also, they said they had scientific evidence to establish that the person arrested from outside Safdarjung Hospital was the real culprit.

However, in view of the allegations, the Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, transferred the case to the Crime Branch on Monday.

"The case has been transferred to the other Department to corroborate the facts gathered by the South-West Delhi police. We are, however, confident that we have arrested the right person," said a police officer.
