July 7 "bombers'' did a dry run

Hasan Suroor

LONDON: Police believe that the men behind the July 7 terror attacks in London carried out a "dry'' run nine days before they blew themselves up on three Underground trains in one of the worst atrocities since 9/11.

After trawling through some 80,000 CCTV tapes, which claimed 56 lives, investigators are reported to have concluded that a "dummy run'' was conducted on the three stations — Edgware Road, Liverpool Street and King's Cross.

The footage reportedly shows three of the bombers entering Luton station where they gathered before travelling to King's Cross station and then dispersing in different directions.

For the first time, Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attacks with the group's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri saying in a videotaped message telecast on al-Jazeera television that it had the "honour'' of carrying out the attacks. Previously, he had only praised the attacks.
