MOSCOW: Ukraine's Parliament on Tuesday rejected President Viktor Yushchenko's candidate to Prime Minister, plunging the "Orange Revolution" administration into deeper political crisis. Mr. Yuri Yekhanurov, an apolitical technocrat, nominated by Mr. Yushchenko to replace Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko he fired earlier this month, won 223 votes, three short of the required majority in the 450-seat Verkhovna Rada. Mr. Yushchenko's defeat in Parliament has deepened the political crisis that broke out in early September when Ms. Tymoshenko's allies accused Mr. Yushchenko's close aides of corruption and abuse of office. He retaliated by sacking Ms. Timoshenko, who had been the fiery spirit of the pro-Western "Orange Revolution" that catapulted Mr. Yushchenko to presidency at the end of 2004.
