Giving trees on IT corridor fresh lease of life

MOVING TREES: A crane shifts a tree from IT corridor project site.

CHENNAI: Lush green trees, which would have got the axe in the name of development of the Information Technology corridor, got a fresh lease of life, thanks to transplantation and road realignment. The IT Expressway Limited, a partner of the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC), prevented 281 trees from getting chopped down for road widening.

The transplantation process was not easy. Says Sabina Narayan, coordinator of community development of TNRDC, "The branches are pruned, a trench is dug around the tree and fungicide is applied at the roots. The uprooted tree is transported by crane to the selected area and re-planted."

Each transplantation costs Rs. 3,000, most of it going for transportation and using cranes. "Transplantation needs to be supplemented with post-planting maintenance and care,'' says V. Ramkumar, manager of landscaping of the IT Expressway project.

Most trees start developing white roots, proof that they are responding to the new environment. However, not all trees can be saved. Of the 391 trees identified in the initial survey, only 70 per cent of the trees could be transplanted."
