Karnataka Nataka Academy told to focus on training actors

BANGALORE: Chandrasekhar Kambara, noted Kannada playwright and nominated MLC, was on Tuesday felicitated by the Karnataka Nataka Academy on his getting the prestigious Jeshuva award of Andhra Pradesh.

Chairman of the Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan honoured Dr. Kambara and his wife. Dr. Kambara, a former vice-chancellor of Kannada University at Hampi, urged the Academy to lay emphasis on training actors and not directors, who have become a "bundle of arrogance". While an actor relives the essence of life, the director only gives an idea.

He said that drama and music are taught in over 32 universities, but no actor has blossomed. Expressing his anguish over the negative effect of literacy and the legacy of British methodology of learning on the folklore,

Prof. Kambara said that it has resulted in the loss of the native in Indian culture. The shruti and smruti tradition of Indian culture have preserved Vedas, Upanishads and the epics to this day. "We need not ape British or American values as it will destroy the `desi' culture," he added.

Srinivasa Kappanna, President of the Academy welcomed. K.E. Radhakrishna, Principal, Surana College and Siddalingiah, poet and former MLC spoke.
