Sports Reporter

MATHURA: Delhi's shot putter Shiv Kumar became the first athlete at the 17th North Zone junior athletics championship to set a new junior national record as he hurled the iron ball to a distance of 19.16 meters in the boy's under-18 event here on Tuesday.

In his sixth and final attempt, Shiv Kumar breached the 19m mark to better Kulwinder Singh's existing record of 18.04m achieved in Meerut in 2004. Kulwinder had also held the meet record of 17.55m.

Six more new meet records were set on the second day of the championship. Uttar Pradesh's Rajesh Kumar Yadav's leap of 7.32 meters in the boy's under-20 long jump and Haryana's Rinku Sangwan's throw of 11.69 meters in girls under-16 shot put were notable performances.

Haryana led the overall tally with 28 gold, 21 silver and 20 bronze medals. Uttar Pradesh (20, 18, 20) and Delhi (13, 11, 8) were placed second and third respectively.
