NCC's battle

against AIDS

NEW DELHI: Joining the battle against AIDS with UN AIDS, the Director-General of NCC, Lieutenant-General M.C. Bhandari, inaugurated a three-day capsule for training of NCC master trainers about the disease. Aiming to make young people aware of the dangers of the disease, the programme hopes to reach 1.3 million cadets with its message.

The programme, which will train 54 NCC officers including an officer of the rank of Colonel in the first phase by UNESCO and UN AIDS experts, aims to spread the word through these master trainers. In the second stage, the master trainers will train peer educators across the NCC units.

Community centre dedicated

NEW DELHI: The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Mukesh Goel, on Tuesday dedicated a newly constructed community centre in Sector 5 of Rohini to the residents of North-West Delhi.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Standing Committee, Vijender Kumar Gupta, who presided over the function, demanded that the community hall be handed over to the residents' welfare association for day-to-day maintenance.

Occupational safety convention

NEW DELHI: A three-day national convention on "Challenges of Occupational Safety and Health" will begin here on September 27.

A large number of safety engineers, policymakers, scientists, researchers, technicians and physicians besides NGOs, corporate people and students will participate in the convention organised by the Safety and Quality Forum, Institution of Engineers (India), along with Quality Council of India, Bureau of Indian Standards and the Delhi State Centre, Institute of Engineers (India).

Awards presented

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi presented awards to the winners of the 12th edition of the National Sports Club of India's Rajiv Gandhi Marathon Run at 10 Janpath over the weekend.

Speaking on the occasion, NDSI president Subhash Chopra informed that these children from slums would receive scholarship till they complete their higher secondary education.

Two-year RI for cheating

New Delhi: A man, who cheated a person of Rs 20,000 by promising to help him get an STD/PCO connection from the Department of Telecommunication, was on Tuesday sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for two years after a decade long trial.

Metropoliatn Magistrate Siddharth Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 4,000 on the convict Puran Chand Gupta finding him guilty of cheating Mahabir Singh Negi, a resident of Dehra Dun in Uttaranchal. The prosecution examined six witnesses.
