RAIN PLAYS HAVOC: People wading through water on the streets of Nalgonda, which were flooded due to incessant rain for the past two days.
NALGONDA: Normal life in Nalgonda district was thrown out of gear with incessant rain in the last 48 hours. One engineering student died and two others sustained severe injuries in rain-related incidents while about 650 families were shifted to safer places from low-lying areas in the district. Morthala Govardhan Reddy (22), a second year engineering student of NIT Engineering College, Kodad, was washed way in floodwaters at Chillepally in Neredcharla mandal. His friend Chandrababu Naidu could come out of the waters.
House collapses
Two persons Chandramma and Shialaiah sustained severe injuries when the wall of their house collapsed owing to the incessant rains in Y.Ramapur in Garidepally mandal. They were immediately rushed to a hospital in Hyderabad where their condition was said to be very serious. The Collector, K.Vijayanand, told reporters that in all 1,400 persons were shifted to safer places from low-lying areas in 20 villages across the district. Mathampally and Miryalaguda mandals in Miryalaguda division are worst-affected. The division received 1286.2 mm of rain on Tuesday alone as against the district average of 54.3 mm. The Collector said that he was in touch with the Nagarjunasagar officials to minimize the damage in villages along the Krishna river.
Colonies inundated
In the Nalgoda town, two colonies Leprosy colony and Rickshaw Pullers colony were inundated with rainwater. Following the instructions of the Collector, a poclain and two tippers were pressed into service to divert the waters. In all ten relief camps were opened. A control room has been opened at the Collectorate and the people facing flood threat are advised to call officers on 244421 and 231995. A special officer had been appointed to receive calls on mobile (98499 04406), the Collector said.
Two deaths
According to reports, a tribal, Shakru (35), was electrocuted at Meegadampadu thanda in Neredcharla mandal and a youngster died at a culvert in Alair mandal. However, the Collectorate officials said that they were not rain-related deaths.
