BANGALORE: The IV Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced a State Government employee to six years imprisonment and fined him Rs. 4,000 for pushing his wife into prostitution. The convicted person, Purushottam, a Group-D employee in the Department of Textiles, had married his paternal cousin. The Magistrate, V.H. Sambrani, also convicted and sentenced Jayamma of Hunsur in Mysore district to four years imprisonment and fined her Rs. 3,000 for helping Purushottam. After a Mysore-based social organisation, Odanadi, made public an inter-State prostitution racket, the BJP MLC, Vimala Gowda, raised the issue in the Legislative Council. Subsequently, the State Government ordered a Corps of Detective (CoD) inquiry into the matter in 2001. The CoD filed a charge sheet in the court in 2003 that Purushottam had pushed his wife into prostitution and had sent her to Ernakulam in Kerala for 30 days after taking Rs. 90,000 from a person. Later, he had sent her to Vijaya Kumar of Coimbatore for 17 days and had taken Rs. 11,000 from him, the charge sheet said. On the basis of Vijay Kumar's mobile phone number, the police arrested him in Mallapuram district in Kerala. The police had also arrested Ashok of Ashoknagar in Bangalore on charges of helping Purushottam.
