DRI deputy director's role under probe

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the role of a deputy director in the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) after his junior was arrested on Sunday for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs. 50 lakhs from a businessman.

The senior intelligence officer, Y.S. Verma, was arrested while taking the first instalment of Rs. 5 lakhs from the complainant. At his instance, the CBI sleuths mounted a raid at a DRI deputy director's residence.

It is learnt that several documents, including bank accounts, were seized from there. However, the CBI has not arrested the deputy director. The officer concerned was nonetheless questioned on the basis of the information provided by Mr. Verma.

A CBI official said allegations against Government officials demanding and accepting bribes were being taken seriously. "We are concerned over a steep rise in such cases.

A couple of days ago, we also got advertisements published in national news papers urging the public to provide information about such officials," the official added.
