Junichiro Koizumi
SINGAPORE: Junichiro Koizumi, who won a landslide parliamentary majority in Japan's snap general election on September 11, was on Wednesday re-elected Prime Minister by the new House of Representatives at a special session in Tokyo. Following this, Mr. Koizumi announced that he would retain his pre-election Cabinet until the end of the current session of the Diet (Parliament), now slated to conclude by November 1. He reaffirmed his pre-election plan to quit as Prime Minister by September next year. In Wednesday's ballot in the 480-member House of Representatives, the charismatic 63-year-old Prime Minister secured 340 votes out of the 479 cast.
