Protest against `encroachment' of island near Hogenekal Falls

Correspondent

CHAMARAJANAGAR: Protesters led by members of the Zilla Kannada Sanghatana Okkuta burned the effigy of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa here on Wednesday condemning the "encroachment" of an island near Hogenakal Falls in Kollegal taluk by the Tamil Nadu Government.

Speaking on the occasion, okkuta president Sha Murali said that the former Minister Mallikarjun Nagappa had promised to carry out a joint survey when the issue was raised in the Assembly in 2000.

However, the Government did not take any steps to carry out the survey. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Government took steps to develop Hogenakal Falls as a tourist destination.

Mr. Murali said the okkuta will stage a dharna in front of the Chief Minister's office if the Government fails to take steps in this regard.

Deputy Commissioner K.R. Shashidhar along with district officials visited Hogenakal Falls on Tuesday. After verifying old land records and maps, the officials of the district administration said the Tamil Nadu Government has encroached upon the State's land.

The joint survey of the land in question has now been stopped.
