Meet stresses on need for organ donation

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Experts called for more awareness on the importance and need of organ transplantation and the significance of declaring brain-dead patients during a seminar on the topic here on Wednesday.

The seminar, `Cadaver organ donation — issues and challenges' organised by Yashoda Hospital and Mohan Hospital, called for cooperation of all hospitals to make the organ donation movement effective and provide relief to thousands of patients suffering from various organ failures.

Clear `doubts'

While Yashoda Hospital nephrologist M.V. Rao called for the conveyance of the message on the significance of organ donation to the kith and kin of those awaiting organs and those of brain dead people, hospital's chief neurophysician Srikant Jawalkar stressed on stipulation of criteria for declaring brain deaths and to clear related misconceptions.

He also wanted use of correct terminology during counselling of relatives of the patient.

Mohan Foundation Trustee Lalita Raghuram, Global Hospital neurosurgeon Chandrasekhar Mone and critical care intensivist Manimala Rao spoke on various issues related to the donation movement, legal methodologies and role of various medical practitioners in the issue.
