DHARMAPURI U: nrest has gripped the Island area that demarcates the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, with Karnataka officials refusing to accept the joint survey carried out by Forest officials of the two States on Monday. To ensure continuation of ongoing development works, the Dharmapuri district administration has decided to post additional police along the border to ensure that construction workers are not harassed. Karnataka Forest officials had objected to the development works taken up by Dharmapuri district administration as part of its facelift in Hogenakkal, a tourist spot. They had said that the land belonged to their territory and that the works were an intrusion. They asked Tamil Nadu Forest officials to stop all development in the Island area.
Joint survey
In the meantime, both the States decided to undertake a joint survey in Hogenakkal, with the help of Forest Survey of India maps. It started as scheduled and about 200 metres in the Island area was surveyed on Monday. On the second day of the joint survey, a team of officials from Karnataka, including Chamraj Nagar Collector Sasidaran Sharma and Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad, arrived at Hogenakkal without any intimation and surveyed the area. They urged Tamil Nadu Forest officials to immediately stop all development works in the Island area.
