AICTE takes steps to deal with shortage

Special Correspondent

Allows employment of teachers up to the age of 70

NEW DELHI: The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on Wednesday admitted to non-availability of senior faculty in the country, especially for specialised subjects such as bio-technology, computer science and engineering, information technology, and electronics and communication engineering.

AICTE has, as an interim measure, permitted the employment of teachers up to the age of 70 in institutions that have its approval. It has also permitted relaxation in cadre ratio for these subjects.

In a statement here on the status of technical education, AICTE said it had sanctioned 211 new institutions for this academic year, creating 23,651 additional seats in various disciplines across the country. This includes 35 MBA institutions with 2,000 seats, seven MCA institutions with 420 seats, 90 pharmacy institutions with 5,350 seats, 69 engineering and technology institutions with 15,346 seats, eight hotel management institutions with 480 seats, one Fine Arts institute with 15 seats and an architecture institute with 40 seats.

Also, the AICTE undertook the first-ever "comprehensive inspection'' of its approved institutions vis-a-vis compliance of its norms and standards. Since it is the most crucial for the quality of education, faculty strength was the main yardstick on which the institutions were examined.

While institutes running courses with a faculty deficiency of 25 per cent were granted extension of approval, courses with a higher faculty deficiency were placed in reduced intake category. Though 39,540 seats were reduced owing to this, the Council restored 31,945 seats when the institutions concerned strengthened their faculty.
