VISAKHAPATNAM: : Train passengers bound for Vijayawada and beyond had a harrowing time at the railway station here as most of the trains remained cancelled for the second day on Wednesday.

Some women, with babies in their arms, were seen waiting on the platforms hoping for the restoration of train services. The wait seemed endless.

The cancellation had to be made in view of the heavy rains that lashed coastal Andhra Pradesh during the last three days.

Coolies were seen loitering in the station, as many passengers from the city bound for other places remained on knowing that trains were cancelled.

There was, however, a heavy rush at the reservation complex as passengers made a beeline to the cancellation counters to cancel their tickets.

Special buses

Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) rose to the occasion by operating nearly 60 special buses to Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Kakinada and Rajahmundry on Wednesday.

"We have operated 22 buses from the railway station. These include three to Hyderabad, 12 to Vijayawada, five to Rajahmundry and two to Kakinada. As many as 37 special buses were operated from the Dwaraka Bus Station (RTC Complex) to Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Kakinada," APSRTC regional manager D. Satyanarayana told The Hindu .

The buses were operated via Vijayawada, Guntur and Sattenapalli.
