WALTZ AND SWING: Part of an old tradition
A night high on waltz and swing, this coming Saturday will see the Capital get entertained Viennese style. A rare chance to be part of a tradition that has made its journey from aristocratic celebrations to diplomatic conferences, the Viennese Ball promises to be an evening of colour, music and dance. Being organised by the Austrian Embassy in association with the Taj Mahal Hotel, the event will have the 30 members of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra present some of the finest classical compositions on Saturday night as selective Indian and foreign couples take to the floor. Part of an old tradition, the Viennese Ball will open with a typical march in phases by young couples who have been trained by Austrian dance trainers Heinz and Karin Grossmann. The music will be conducted by world-renowned music maestro Joji Hattori. Founded in 1946, the orchestra has over the years attained the distinction of being one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world. Making the event an even more memorable affair will be a sumptuous spread of Austrian buffet and choicest of wines. But those who don't know how to waltz need not worry. The evening will provide enough opportunities for people to shake their leg, what with popular numbers to be played in the Taj discotheque to provide extra colour to the evening. In India after a gap of nearly four years, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra will also perform at the Sri Sathya Sai International Centre on Lodhi Road, this Friday. Lakshmi B. Ghosh
