BJP president L.K. Advani has at last succumbed to RSS pressure and announced that he will demit office. A decade ago, Mr. Advani catapulted the BJP to the number-two position in national politics. The party's leadership of the NDA and six years in power followed. No sooner did the 2004 electoral debacle take place than the witch-hunt started.

The BJP owes its growth to the RSS cadre and not to Mr. Advani and Mr. Vajpayee. It is the work done by the silent RSS workers in the background that has kept the BJP flag flying. Ever since the big two started humiliating grassroot level RSS workers, the BJP's graph started declining. They have only clamoured for power and sidelined sincere workers over the years.
