Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: : Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Thursday exhorted officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) to review their training methodologies and shape it to keep pace with new challenges. Inaugurating the 33rd BSF annual training conference here, Mr. Patil said the force had always been in the forefront in border policing.
Adversaries' ingenuity
Recalling its role in dealing with militancy and terrorism, specifically in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Patil said the BSF would have to deal with the ingenuity of the adversaries. The heavy engagement of the BSF under the most difficult conditions had impacted upon not only on providing the desired rest and relief to the troops but had also encroached upon the time for training.
Overstretched
BSF Director-General R. S. Mooshahary said the force was overstretched due to its various duties, especially in counter-insurgency and elections, affecting training. In view of the present internal security situation, the only way out would be to raise adequate number of battalions as reserve so that the training schedule could go on. He urged the Home Minister to finalise the proposal of raising 20 reserve battalions at the earliest.
