A small segment between Tirunelveli and Kayathar on the Tirunelveli - Madurai national highway has become a highly dangerous zone as the top layer of this thoroughfare has been laid shoddily. Thanks to improper mixing of tar and blue metal, an excessive deposition of asphalt at several places on this road near Gangaikondan deer park and Kovilpatti flour mill at Duraiyoor can be seen causing frequent accidents as vehicle tyres lose their grip on the road. The many skid marks on the road lend undoubtable evidence to this claim. When the tar melts during the day due to the heat, drivers have to cross this stretch very carefully. After several accidents, including fatal ones, the Police Department wrote several letters to the Department of National Highways concerning the issue, but no effort has been taken to relay the road.
