Thoi Thoi stuns Jay Bhagwan

M.C. Raman

Kalpakkam: As the race for the team honours intensified, Services and Railways tried their best to pull ahead. But Services' short and stocky K. Thoi Thoi Singh dealt a severe blow to Railways' chances when he eliminated the lanky Jay Bhagwan 20-11 in a light weight bout of the 52nd National senior men's boxing championship at the NESCO ground here on Thursday. Thoi Thoi's victory put Services in a strong position to dethrone the defending champion.

Things were going well for the Railways in the beginning. Ali Qamar, a short man with quick feet and sharp punches, scored over Uttaranchal's Abhishek who was more cautious and not taking chances. Qamar moved in for his punches and rattled his rival now and then with one-twos.

Dodging well, Abhishek tried to avoid Qamar's jabs but the Railwayman was well ahead on points by the third round. His victory gave the Railways a boost and was followed by Bijender Singh's convincing 25-18 victory over Lalit Chahal of Haryana. With better footwork, Bijender landed his punches in quick time.

Lalit tried to make up for his poor start by trying to hustle his opponent in the fourth round, but Bijender was way ahead to be threatened.

Relentless attack

Meanwhile, Services also maintained the momentum as Bipin Pyngrope went on a relentless attack against Subash Debnath of Bengal in the bantam weight category. Subash found it difficult to cope with Bipin, who dominated the fight so much that he had a lead of over 20 points by the third round.

Services surged ahead despite P. Narjit Singh, an agile boxer with quick one-two punches, facing some problems against Sikkim's Ashok Suba. The latter guarded well and even caught his rival off-guard a few times. It was Narjit's agility and his sharp jabs that won him this feather weight bout.

In control

Services scored its third victory when D. Bhagyarajan exhibited his skills. He had to tackle a taller rival — S. Prem Kumar of Mizoram — but Bhagyarajan was in complete control despite Prem's occasional bursts. Bhagyarajan, with sound defence, parried off Prem's jabs and punches before moving in for the kill. Bhagyarajan won their light welter encounter 22-6.
