CHENNAI: The Indian Bank executive director, B. Sambamurthy, expressed concern over Indians attitude towards value-based organisational development. Inaugurating the decennial celebration of the Commerce department of the Alpha Arts and Science College,Mr.Sambamurthy said as the fifth biggest power in the world today and with the advent of knowledge economy, India's influence on the world was set to increase. Indian companies were now concentrating more on analysis and judgment for organisational development but both skills dealt with the past, while the need of the hour was to develop these skills with a futuristic view. Mooting the idea of value-based organisation, Mr. Sambamurthy proposed a structure in which every value would be given a medal-based evaluation. Values were abstract but results were tangible, he said and added that a medal-based categorisation would help better evaluation. He broadly categorised the values as gold, silver, steel, wood, glass and bronze metal evaluations. This proposed model included the value of change, value of existing situation and range of human values under gold medal category, the values of purpose and operations under silver medal category, customer values, quality of service, functional quality and quality of change under the steel medal category, the values of innovation, creativity and simplicity under the glass medal category, the value of impact, nature under the wood metal category and the value of the perception and the value of reality under the bronze metal category. The transition to knowledge sector would need an urgent revamping on these lines. He decried students' attitude which tended to neglect humanities as a discipline and stated that humanities would hold the key in the organisational revamping of India's industries. Humanities equipped the students in developing qualities that would impart these values to organisations.
