Students on the warpath to improve quality of mess food

Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY: For the second time in five months, students from two hostels of Pondicherry University staged a demonstration on Wednesday to protest against the low quality of food supplied in the hostel mess.

A large number of students came out of the campus without taking dinner and tried to stage a road roko. When the police prevented them from blocking the EC Road they attempted to march to the Vice-Chancellor's residence. Vice-Chancellor A. K. Bhatnagar, however, came to the campus and listened to the students' complaints.

The students told him that despite an assurance by the Registrar after their earlier agitation, the quality of food provided in the two hostels, Tagore and Kamban, was still bad. While the mess fee had increased the quality of food had deteriorated.

"Because of the bad quality and the unhygienic way in which the food is cooked students are falling sick. The matter has been taken up with the hostel wardens several times. But nothing has changed," a student told the Vice-Chancellor.

The students complained that though there was a mess committee comprising students, it was not allowed to buy provisions for the mess.

They wanted the Vice-Chancellor to ask the warden to engage them in auditing the accounts of the mess.

Mr. Bhatnagar assured the students that he would look into the complaints and find a solution.
