Modernise Pondicherry mills, labour union demands

Special Correspondent

PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Textile Mills Labour Union has called upon the Administration to modernise the Swadeshi Cotton Mills and Sri Bharathi Mills (which were taken over by Pondicherry Government from the control of National Textiles Corporation on April 1 last) and also run them as units of the Pondicherry Textiles Corporation.

The secretary of the Union, V. S. Abishegam said in a release here on Wednesday that the government should also ensure that the administrative expenditure incurred by the two textile mills was reduced and steps were taken to modernise them.

He also wanted the Centre to speed up its proposal to start augmented textile Production Park on the premises of Swadeshi mills here.

He said textile labourers would extend full support and observe the strike called at the national level on September 29 to assert the rights and privileges of the workers.
