BIDAR: Villagers of Saigaon in Bhalki taluk have demanded crop loss compensation from the State Government after their crops were washed away by the water released into the Majra by the Maharashtra Government on Wednesday night. Crops on over 1,000 acres of land have been destroyed. Over 300 irrigation pumpsets have been damaged and electricity poles along the 10 km stretch in Halsi Tugaon uprooted. "The district administration failed to inform us on time, even though the Maharashtra Government had informed the State Government on Wednesday morning about the water release," the villagers in a memorandum to Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh said. Former zilla panchayat member and Congress leader Nagnath Bagdure has demanded disciplinary action against the in-charge Deputy Commissioner Antony Mendonca. He alleged though the Deputy Commissioner was informed about the water release, he (Mr. Mendonca) did not communicate the same to the villages. "Mr. Mendonca should have flashed a warning to the villages to be affected. We came to know about the decision of the Maharashtra Government to release water into the Majra by listening to All India Radio's Latur Station," Mr. Bagdure said in a letter to Mr. Dharam Singh.
