PILOT PROJECT: Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez inaugurating the `Bidar model' check dam at Babalad in Gulbarga district on Thursday.
GULBARGA: A "Bidar model" multi-arch buttress check dam was inaugurated at Babalad of Gulbarga district on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez said this was cheap and more resilient than traditional check dams. The check dam was built across a 30 m stream at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs, which worked out to be 30 per cent less than traditional check dams. The check dam has seven arches of four m diameter. Over 14,000 cubic feet of water can be stored in the check dam. The check dam will help recharge borewells in and around Babalad. It was built as a pilot project. SIf successful, at least 15 such check dams will be constructed in each of the 10 taluks in the district. Bidar Zilla Panchayat, in association with Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, has perfected the design of these check dams. Over 200 check dams have been constructed across Bidar district. Rural Development and Panchayat Raj secretary V.P. Baligar had recommended all districts to adopt the model, Mr. Parvez said. The check dam was built in association with the Mines and Geology Department. Chief executive officer of Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat Pankaj Kumar Pande was present.
